Rachel Reeves has said it would be “very foolish” for Britain to disengage from China, in a rejection of Donald Trump’s efforts to isolate Beijing.

In an interview with The Telegraph, the Chancellor makes the case for a deeper partnership with China rather than erecting new barriers.

She also backs the Chinese fast fashion company Shein floating on the London stock market, and says she would be happy to ride in Chinese-made electric vehicles despite spying fears.

Asked if she were willing to engage less with China to placate Mr Trump, Ms Reeves says: “Well, China is the second biggest economy in the world, and it would be, I think, very foolish to not engage. That’s the approach of this Government.”
