The thing you were talking about here was Firefox's self defense system...the fireball he launched at the end of movie was flare, which was used to confuse heat-seeking missiles....
The problem with the Russian pilot at 2nd Firefox was that he didn't know Clint Eastwood would launch a flare and let his engine explode....
On the other hand, he didn't expect someone would do that...
